Dog owners are responsible for injuries caused by their pets. Your homeowner’s insurance or renter’s insurance policy would usually have a coverage for this situation, but what if your dog breed is a blacklisted breed? To prevent finding yourself in a financial risk, you need to make sure that your dogs are covered by your insurance policy.
To help you out, here are the most common blacklisted dog breeds:
Dog related injuries accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claims paid out back in 2016. A homeowner can easily file a claim even if it’s not really a fatal bite. And of course, the insurance company is obligated of protecting the owner if he is sued over a bite. It only makes sense that insurance companies would want to avoid the legal expenses from a lawsuit.
Because of this, homeowner’s and renter’s insurance companies are careful as to who they would give an extension of coverage for. If your dog breed is in the “bad dog” list or has a history of acting aggressively or biting someone, chances are, it will result in denial of your coverage. They can also cancel your coverage at the renewal date if they find out that you recently got a dog that they would define as “aggressive”.
Pet liability Insurance
If your dog isn’t qualified for the dog bite coverage of the traditional home insurance, you may consider getting a pet liability insurance. The cost of damage, injury or death caused by your pet will be covered by a pet liability insurance policy. Dog owners in most states are liable for the damages and injuries done by their dog. Some states even require for pet owners to get a pet liability insurance if their dog is classified as “bad” or “dangerous”.
Canine Good Citizen Certificate
Insurance agents may grant you coverage if your dog has earned the “Canine Good Citizen” certificate. The Canine Good Citizen program is run by the American Kennel Club. Their programs are recognized for good dog behavior. You may want to check with your insurance company if this training can help you get coverage for your dog.
You may dislike the idea of getting your dog a pet liability insurance just because others think that he or she is dangerous but it’s better to pay for a coverage than to be separated from your beloved friend due to housing restrictions. Find the right policy and rest assured that you and your dog will stay together.
