The Murzzy Blog
There may be more going on behind your walls than you know. Uncountable trespassers can be crawling around and slowly eating your home away. I am talking about termites. They can compromise the structural integrity of your home putting you and everyone in it at risk. Termites may be hard to spot, but there are subtle signs before it's too late.
Discarded Wings Of Swarmers
Scattered swarmer wings are most often the first sign visible for a possible termite infestation. Swarmers are young female termites that look for their next target. If your home has been targeted, expect to see some swarmers, usually near light sources. You will also see some discarded wings by doors and windows.
Tap wood surfaces around your home. If they sound hollow, that might be another sign. Termites eat wood from the inside out. If you see rotten wood or damaged wood from the outside, they may already have worked their way out. Look out for small holes, soft surfaces, and decaying wood areas.
You may see some mud tunnels around your foundation. These little tubes are a passageway for moisture from the food source to the termite's home. These are made by subterranean termites. Unfortunately, if you find these mud tubes, they are made by the most destructive type of termite.
Frass is the droppings of drywood termites. They are wood-like in color and pellet shaped. You may find a pile of this somewhere around your home. This is another sign of termite infestation, more specifically of a drywood termite.
Like any disease, prevention is always the best cure. Have your wood treated to be resistant to termites. You may also want to use wood variants that are naturally resistant to insects. Prevent wood from getting wood if it is not treated, and watch out for extra moisture. Soften wood is more appealing to termites, so you want to make sure wood surfaces are always dry.
It is highly encouraged to have your home inspected by professionals regularly. This is the best way to prevent any outbreaks. Remember, since they work from the inside out, it is very difficult to spot them early. Many of the signs happen when the infestation has been going on for some time already.
